We want to congratulate Bishop Moore Catholic High School on receiving the St. Teresa of Calcutta Award for high schools for demonstrating the compassion and corporal works of mercy exemplified by St. Teresa during the 2020-2021 school year.

In January, the BMC student body participated in a school-wide technology drive to collect electronic devices to be refurbished and redistributed in the local community. This project formed in response to thousands of students in the greater Orlando area who were learning virtually during the pandemic without an adequate computer or tablet. This prevented many from being able to succeed in their studies.

BMC students recognized the need and partnered with the Aeras Foundation in their mission to “empower through technology.” The partners worked hand in hand to digitally wipe-clean, refurbish, and prepare computers for new software. Hundreds of devices were collected, and students learned the important role they play in empowering those most in need. Parents and alumni also joined in this work of mercy by collecting devices at their places of business.

“We are humbled and honored to receive this award in partnership with the Aeras Foundation,” BMC principal Dr. Erika Wikstrom said. “Bishop Moore Catholic responded to the call to put technology in the hands of those in need in our Central Florida community.”

“St. Mother Teresa said, ‘The fruit of love is service, which is compassion in action.’ The COVID pandemic brought to light various needs in our community that perhaps go unnoticed during a normal school year,” Wilkstrom said. “One of those needs is the digital divide. In our partnership with the Aeras Foundation, we learned that thousands of students in the greater Orlando area were at home during the pandemic without an adequate electronic device to succeed in their studies and continue learning from home. In recognizing this need, our students were inspired to act.”

These students collected hundreds of devices and used their own hands to prepare them to be given away. At the heart of Catholic identity is responding to the present needs of the community. They saw people hurting, their hearts were moved, and they acted to bring Christ’s love and compassion to the world around them in a tangible way.
