Delicious Meals For Those Meatless Fridays During Lent

Every Friday during Lent, Catholics observe a meat-free day. The act of fasting allows us to be more mindful of Jesus’s sacrifice, giving us the opportunity to amplify our relationship with Him. We have put together a list of our favorite alternative foods that your child will love. It is our hope that these tips can help enhance your child’s Lenten experience!

Beefless Burgers
Don’t assume that skipping meat means missing out on burgers! Veggie burgers are an excellent alternative and can be found at basically any grocery store. You can opt for patties made from beans, vegetables, or soy/gluten to mimic the real thing. Load them up with your favorite toppings, and you’ve got yourself a great lunch!

Eggs, Eggs, and More Eggs
So many Catholic families use eggs as a fallback food during Lent. If you can’t think of anything else to make, eggs are versatile and quick to make. Fry them with toast, fold them into an omelet, scramble them with vegetables and cheese, or eat them hard boiled on a scrumptious salad. Either way, you’ll get that extra protein fix you need while maintaining meat-free meals!

Pasta a la Lots of Cheese
Pasta is another food that families often eat during this period of abstinence. From spaghetti to penne a la vodka to mac and cheese, the options are endless. Your child can load her noodles up with tofu, vegetables, and cheese. It’s OK — let your child treat herself on Fridays during Lent. It’s a hearty meal that will keep her full and satisfied!

We Can Eat Fish!
Just because we can’t eat meat doesn’t mean we can’t have some fish! Tuna can be grilled or tossed with mayonnaise, then added to a salad, sandwich, or paired with vegetables. And enjoy the endless sushi options at your local grocery stores and restaurants!
