Tips to Get Started

If you want to start cooking with your child but you’re afraid he will hurt herself or he will make a mess, there are some precautions you can take! Here are some things to keep in mind before you get started, so you can make sure the process goes smoothly.

  1. Start small: Don’t jump into a big recipe, no matter how many generations in your family followed it. Build up skills with simple steps, such as pounding the spuds and measuring seasonings.

  2. Manage messes: Cooking can get messy, but you can keep your kitchen from looking like a disaster with cleaning-as-you-go techniques. For instance, if you’ve got a measuring spoon dripping with batter, place it in a mug. After you’ve collected all your dripping spoons in the mug, take it to the sink to prevent splatter.

  3. Encourage independence: Your child may be too young to cook on his own, but allowing him independence is important for the process. Allow him to make some child-friendly foods, such as overnight oats. You can monitor him, but don’t control him because he has a mind of his own!

Recipes to Cook

Now that we’ve got some key rules out of the way to prepare, it’s time to get cooking! Here are some easy recipe ideas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner that your child will love!

Breakfast Popsicles

Getting your child to eat healthy — specifically fruit and yogurt — for breakfast may be tough. But he sure will love to eat popsicles. So imagine a fruit and yogurt popsicle. All you need is fruit and yogurt — seriously! This recipe from Caramel Potatoes won’t bore your child and will get him eating his nutrients fast. Plus, you’ll be the coolest mom ever!

Tater Tot Grilled Cheese Sandwich

This one may be more on the indulgent side, but sometimes we need a tasty treat. Who doesn’t love tater tots and cheese? Why not melt them together. Delish’s recipe only includes cooking spray, tater tots, bread, and cheese. This recipe requires heat, so it may only be suitable for older children, with supervision.

PB&J Taco

Perfect for Taco Tuesday, this Delish recipe combines the classic deliciousness of peanut butter and jelly with tacos. It requires no cooking and is super healthy. You can switch it up with different butters, jams, and fruits for a good variety.
