Orlando Catholic Diocese Winter Sport Leagues

cheerleader-673490_1920Schools in the Diocese of Orlando believe participating in school sports is an integral part of a complete education of the mind, body, and spirit. Sports offer students the opportunity to exercise, develop lasting friendships, work with others, experience the euphoria of a game well played, prove their skills outside the classroom, and better understand the role of sportsmanship in all aspects of life. Catholic schools in Orlando participate in two leagues, depending on grade level: the Florida High School Athletic Association hosts high school students, while elementary and middle school students participate in the Catholic Youth Sports league. As fall winds down, winter sports take the forefront with a new batch of meets, leagues, and tournaments. Below are the grade levels along with sports for each.

  • Elementary students interested in joining a sports team can take advantage of Catholic Youth Sports including flag football and girls’ lacrosse.
  • Middle school students are also involved in the Catholic Youth Sports league. Their team sports include boys’ and girls’ track, boys’ basketball, and girls’ soccer.
  • High school students are eligible to be part of the Florida High School Athletic Association. The winter lineup for sports for this league includes competitive cheerleading, boys’ and girls’ soccer, girls’ weightlifting, boys’ and girls’ basketball, and boys’ wrestling.

In order for students to participate in sports, they must maintain a 2.0 grade point average, exhibit Christ-like behavior both on and off the playing field, show good sportsmanship and compete as a team, prove they can learn by the errors they make on the field, and respect their teammates, coaches, officials, and referees.Your child will truly benefit from being part of a Diocese of Orlando Catholic sports team. The Catholic schools in Orlando have opportunities throughout the year for students to participate in the preceding sports and many others.
