Holly Talbert teaches Language Arts at St. Charles Borromeo and is passionate about creating an exciting and memorable learning experience for her students! Learn more about her and the experience she brings to her classroom:Where did you grow up?I grew up in Brunswick, GA.Tell us about your journey to becoming a teacher. When I was in high school, I participated in an internship program where I got to learn about being a teacher and observe and shadow teachers as part of my school day. I fell in love with teaching elementary school music, and I knew I wanted to pursue a degree in education. Halfway through my degree program in college, I changed from elementary to middle school education because I wanted to teach more advanced content in reading, writing, and social studies. When I graduated with my Bachelors in 2009, I was fortunate to find a job teaching in a Catholic school on Tybee Island, GA.How do you engage your students in the learning experience?I build relationships with them and bring humor and energy into the classroom. If I’m excited about what I’m teaching, then the kids will jump on board with me, whether it’s getting into a new book or learning how to identify infinitives in a sentence. What’s your favorite thing about teaching Language Arts?My favorite thing about teaching language arts is helping to grow children into lifelong readers and writers. Mastery of the English language is so important in being a successful adult, and the more you like it as a kid, the better off you’ll be later. What’s the most rewarding thing about your job?The most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing that “light bulb” come on. When a kid finally gets it, it’s the greatest feeling in the world. When a kid finds a book he or she loves, it’s divine. It is literally seeing God’s work in the classroom. What do you enjoy about teaching at St. Charles Borromeo?St. Charles Borromeo is a great place to teach because it has a wonderful community of support. The school and church staffs, the priests, the parents, the students, and the volunteers continue to make this a positive place to work and grow. What do you hope your students take away from being in your classroom?I hope they take away that learning and trying new things is fun and working hard is worth it.
