Blessing of the Pets

On October 4th, Catholics everywhere celebrate the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Animals. In remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures, animals are led to churches for a special ceremony called the “Blessing of the Animals.” Catholic schools Orlando has activities for your family to observe this holiday that is full of major evangelism opportunities.

Visit a Shelter
Support your local nonprofit animal shelter by visiting and donating or coordinating an adoption event. Invite the shelter to do a mobile adoption event at the school. Shelters need all the help they can get — even just bags of food or selling homemade dog treats. But the end goal is to give the animals a loving home, and that is a blessing in itself.

Pet Portraits
Call your family photographer — it’s time for portraits! If you don’t have one, support a local photographer from your congregation. Cherish your pet’s blessing by capturing the moment forever. Get your child even more involved by having him and his peers paint a backdrop. Share the memories on social media in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.

Discounted Vaccinations
Fulfill your stewardship duties and dip into evangelism dollars by contributing to low-cost rabies vaccinations. Find a veterinarian in the congregation who may be willing to provide discounted services for the holiday. Health is a blessing, and it’s just as important for our pets.

Phone a Priest
If your pet doesn’t do well being among other pets or in crowds of people, consider calling a priest. The priest can deliver the prayer via telephone or can visit your home. Whether you are memorializing a pet that has passed or want to give thanks to your pet, there is a prayer for all.
