Five Ways to Celebrate Pi Day

The Diocese’s best private schools in Orlando observe Pi Day to celebrate the Greek symbol “π.” This mathematical constant represents the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. Even if he isn’t a math-lover, the 14th of March can be a fun day for your child with these activities!

Pie for Pi Day
It may seem obvious or overdone, but who cares — everyone loves pie! For Pi Day, you and your child can bake a Pi-themed pie with a cutout of the symbol on it. Whether it’s apple or pumpkin, let your child choose his favorite flavor filling of this delectable baked good. Let your child practice his math skills by inviting him into the baking and preparation process that requires measuring and math skills. Then, you both can decipher the ratio and circumference of the dessert!

Crafty Creations
Get crafty this year by making Pi jewelry! Perfect for a child who loves arts and crafts, beading is a creative way to learn all about math and science. Make by Pi bracelets with a variety of bead colors. Each hue will represent an odd or even number in the first nine digits. With this activity, your child will learn the order of numbers and be left with a cool celebratory piece of jewelry!

Read All About It
If your child just isn’t that into numbers, spark his interest by reading fascinating books on math and science. Literature-lovers can find appeal in good storytelling. For instance, Cindy Neuschwander’s book series, The Sir Cumference, can introduce your child to mathematics behind the shape of a circle. The story follows a father, Sir Cumference, and his son, Radius, who is on his way to becoming a knight. Not only will your child find the symbolism cute, but he will find value in circular objects!
