How to Pray When You’re Angry

Life doesn’t always go the way we would like it to, and sometimes this results in us questioning God’s involvement — or lack thereof — in our lives. This is a very common and natural feeling when times get tough! It’s important to remember that no matter what, God will always love us, forgive us, and protect us, even when it doesn’t feel like He’s there. But sometimes, this can be hard to remember; in those times, how can we continue to have meaningful prayer time with God?Step One: Change Your PerspectiveRemind yourself that while God is the omnipotent creator of the world, He’s also our father, and we are His children. Try to speak to Him as if you are speaking to a parent. Think about times in the past when you have gotten angry with your parents, spouse, or close friends. It would have been impossible to get past those times without sharing your frustrations and then listening to them in return. Healthy relationships have good communication, and your relationship with God is no different. As your parent, He wants to hear about what you’re feeling!Step Two: Remember All Things are Easier With GodIt can be difficult to follow God’s calling, particularly when He’s asking us to do something we are afraid of doing. But it’s important to remember that He is the King of the Universe and He’s fighting for us! No matter what, God is always there and we are never alone. Step Three: Face Our SorrowsSometimes we can find it difficult to have conversations with God because it means having to face our fears, faults, and pain. However, if we don’t face these things, we can never move past them. This becomes substantially easier when we recognize that God faces them with us. Remember that Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”Step Four: Accept Our Limited UnderstandingIt can be easy to blame our lack of understanding on God, but we must remember that all things are easier through Him. Accept the reality that not everything in your life will be in your control or within your understanding; in addition, you will never understand everything about God. Psalm 147:5 reads, “Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.” Therefore, instead of searching for yourself in prayer, turn to God and search more deeply for Him.Our blog page has helpful hints for parents to encourage their children to excel academically, spiritually, and socially.
