The No Comfort Zone Summer

One of the many joys of summer is having time to relax, pick up the books we’ve wanted to read all year, and sometimes even enjoy a lazy day at home. Sometimes we really need this kind of summer: a chance to let our minds and souls rest and recuperate after a busy school year. And while it’s important to intentionally rest and take care of ourselves, summertime is more than just relaxing. It’s a great time to take care of your community, both local and global. There are times — particularly during the summer — when it can feel more difficult than usual to listen to God’s calling and actively seek out the work that He asks us to do. (Especially when that calling might take us away from the comfort of our laidback summer days.) God is always calling us to show His love to the world around us, so don’t let your desire for a relaxing summer keep you from giving your time and resources to those who need it. You’ll find that when you listen to Him, the joy you feel is infinitely greater than anything you could have planned.Make sure you keep in mind that getting out of your comfort zone this summer doesn’t necessarily mean you have to quit your job and become a missionary, give up all of your possessions, or cancel all of your family vacations. (In fact, family vacations are important for bonding with your children.) But God works on all levels, and the little things are just as important. Perhaps His calling for you this summer is to reach out to the person you always see in line at Starbucks, or maybe it’s time for you to act on your passion for animals by getting you and your children involved at the local animal shelter. You might be called to spend time with your elderly neighbor, begin volunteering with your church’s youth ministry, or join a small group.Whatever you feel God’s calling is for you, don’t let fear keep you from answering it! Use this summer to step outside of your comfort zone and show His love to the world. Our blog page has helpful hints for parents to encourage their children to excel academically, spiritually, and socially.
