Insider’s Guide to Summer Camp
School is out and it’s time for your child’s next big adventure: summer camp! While going to camp is fun and exciting, it can be a little overwhelming to look at the packing list and wonder, “Where should I start? How can I make sure he has everything he needs?” With these insider tips, you and your child can both feel prepared for his week at camp.Follow the Packing ListMost camps will provide a packing list to ensure your child doesn’t go to camp with the wrong items, or get held back from participating because he or she doesn’t have what’s necessary. Here are some things to keep in mind when you help your child pack:
- Color coordinate his camp supplies in his favorite color to help him quickly identify his things. For example, if his favorite color is purple, buy a purple disposable toothbrush, or wrap purple rubber bands around his shampoo.
- Pack his hygiene items in a small shower bag so they’re all in one place. This way, things are less likely to get lost, and it will make it easier for him to bring his things to and from the bathroom!
- Old clothes are the best clothes. Between dirt, mud, and messy games, don’t send your child’s new shoes and clothes only to have them destroyed by outdoor activities. If your child isn’t concerned about keeping his clothes and shoes clean, he’ll be able to enjoy activities!
- Pack sun protection. Along with sunscreen, provide your child with UVA/UVB protected lip balm, sunglasses, and leave-in hair treatments.
- Make sure your child packs a pool towel as well as a bath towel.
- Divide types of clothing into labeled baggies, such as swimwear, shorts, socks, and pajamas. If your child is younger, you can even pack and label each day’s outfits!
- Finally, help your child create a packing list so he will be able to bring back everything he packed.
Book the Doctor NowIf your child needs vaccines or a physical in order to attend camp, don’t wait until the last minute to see the doctor. Make your appointment now so that you don’t run into complications if your doctor is booked solid the week before camp. Label EVERYTHINGEven if you coordinate the colors of your child’s items, it’s always important to label everything by writing his or her name in permanent marker. Prepare for Homesickness Finally, make sure your child knows that feeling homesick is perfectly normal! Encourage him to write you letters, take pictures with his new friends, and write down all of his favorite memories so he can tell you all about their experience. Our blog page has helpful hints for parents to encourage their children to excel academically, spiritually, and socially.
