Take the Summer Challenge
Looking for ways to not just keep your child occupied this summer, but for activities that are enjoyable, educational, and encourage self-motivation and teamwork? We have the perfect choices for you. With this Summer Challenge, you can make the most out of every child’s summer vacation! How It WorksAt the beginning of the summer, give each of your children a list of age-appropriate tasks that they must each accomplish in order to receive a reward. Make sure the reward is enticing, but also something you would be willing to hold back from your child should he or she not complete the necessary tasks. (For example, don’t make the reward a family trip that you will take regardless.) Consider adding another rule — in order to receive the reward, every child must complete his or her goals. This encourages your children to help each other accomplish their tasks. The InstructionWhen you reveal the Summer Challenge, “unveil” the reward with a picture or collage to get your children even more excited! It can also help to split the reward into three parts — one for each month of summer. For example, you can set one goal for June, one for July, and one for August, with a reward received after each monthly goal is complete. This is particularly helpful for younger children! The ChallengesTry to focus the tasks on things you’d like your children to learn over the summer. Frame your tasks into these four categories: spiritual, mental, physical, and helpful. It’s important to choose things that are specific and age-appropriate so that your child is more likely to accomplish her list! These tasks don’t all have to be challenging or feel like “work.” In fact, incorporating fun and easy tasks can help motivate your child to find joy in her Summer Challenge! A Point System for Good MeasureThe list of tasks that you give your child should each come with a certain number of points. Tasks that are harder or that you really want her to accomplish should have a higher amount of points attached, which might encourage her to tackle some of the more challenging items on the list. Make sure you remind her that she can ask for your guidance if she feels overwhelmed.Keeping ScoreMake it clear that every point earned must be approved by you to dissuade your children from trying to cheat their way to earning a reward. There are several fun ways your child can track her points. From placing small stickers on corresponding rows, to adding beads to a labeled container in corresponding point amounts, the possibilities are nearly endless! Our blog page has helpful hints for parents to encourage their children to excel academically, spiritually, and socially.
