The Power of Parents in Their Child’s Education

girl-1641215_1920Your child’s education is important, and your role can mean the difference in his or her performance. The attitude you show toward homework, schoolwork, and education, in general, is reflected in how your child perceives learning. The Orlando Catholic Diocese recognizes the power of parenthood in Catholic schools in Orange and Seminole counties  and offers tips to help you more successfully become an advocate for your child’s education.Homework HelpAsking if your child has finished his or her homework is not always sufficient. If the assignment is not understood, the effort may not produce the results you anticipate. Check the homework and offer assistance when it is needed. Do not give answers. Instead, lead the conversation with questions to ascertain which part of the assignment is misunderstood, then have your child explain how to proceed. If the homework material is unfamiliar, call the school to see if tutoring is offered, or ask the teacher to explain the lesson to you. Online help is often available; Khan Academy offers free tutorials for almost every subject.School Help If you truly believe your child is either struggling with a class or is not stimulated to learn because the information is below his or her learning abilities, talk to the teacher and guidance counselor. Children spend the bulk of their day within the walls of a school. Make that time worthwhile by proper placement.Volunteering Every school appreciates the parents and grandparents who volunteer. Whether your strength is reading to first graders or stapling papers, your child’s school needs you. Volunteering one hour a day or half a day a month can mean a significant difference.Be a CheerleaderChildren who participate in extracurricular activities or sports appreciate seeing their parents cheering from the sidelines. Go to chess tournaments, recitals, and games. The amount of effort you put in your child’s education will be noticed, and it will strengthen his or her self-esteem. As self-esteem grows, the ability to succeed escalates. Every action and each minute you spend on your child’s education will pay off in dividends.
