What We Can Learn From Mary

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, what better time to reflect on the great lessons we can learn from our holy mother, Mary? Whether or not we experience motherhood firsthand, these are lessons we can all incorporate into our daily lives.Fear Is Not a SinWhen the angel Gabriel came to Mary, Mary was afraid. However, the angel assured Mary with his words from Luke 1:29-30: “Do not be afraid, for you have found favor with God.” It is natural to be scared when attempting new things, even if it’s something that we can hear God calling us to; sometimes these things may be challenging or even frightening. Maybe you feel called to help others in countries torn apart by war, to start a food pantry, or to share your testimony with your new neighbor. (Remember that all of these things are important!) In times where we feel afraid, we can look to Mary’s example and remember that our fear can bring us closer to God.You Are a Worthy ServantWhen God chose Mary to carry Jesus, Mary was an unmarried teenager who came from a humble home — yet God chose her to be the Earthly mother to our savior. Just like Mary, it doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from, or even what your past entails. If you have accepted God into your heart, you are a worthy servant who can do good in the world on behalf of the Lord.Say Yes to God’s CallingWhen Mary accepts her role in God’s plan, she understands that her abilities are not what matters to God, but rather her willingness to take up His calling. Sometimes we pass up opportunities because we don’t feel confident, but if we follow Mary’s example, we know that God will use us regardless of our own confidence in our abilities. Keep the FaithMary’s strength in her faith and trust in God was what empowered her to accept God’s calling. Despite the consequences it could have had for her within society, she accepted this calling, saying, "I am the Lord's servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38) Mary demonstrates that if we put our trust in God, He will deliver on His promises, no matter how impossible they might seem to be.
