Home Improvement Projects While Social Distancing

Are there home improvement projects on your to-do list that have been waiting to be checked off? Now that you’re social distancing, it’s the perfect time to play catch up. Invite your child to help with age-safe responsibilities, and it’ll be a family bonding experience! Here are some projects you can do together.

House Plants
Bring the outdoors inside by repotting plants! From teacups to jars, you can use literally anything as a plant pot. It’s important to note, too, that houseplants have been shown to improve quality of life by reducing toxins from the air. Pothos and succulents are easy to keep alive and brighten up any room. Create an oasis in your shower by placing plants like aloe vera and bamboo in your bathroom. Due to the abundance of moisture, your bathroom is actually a beneficial space for a little garden.

Decorate the Mailbox
Make your mailbox your own by decorating it with your style! Liven it up with personal touches and letting your child paint it. Teach your child how to write letters to loved ones, and how to get the mail from the newly designed mailbox. She will be so excited to use it after she uses her creative skills to decorate it!

Paint the Rooms
Freshen up your home with new coats of paint. This project is a simple way to change things up around your home. This is a safe activity and gives you the opportunity to show your child how to work neatly! Let your child choose the colors, then lay out the floor covers and get to painting. Paint projects like these are a great way to introduce painting. Once your child is older, she can start participating in bigger projects and even painting her own bedroom herself!

Organization
Do you ever watch organization videos on YouTube and think you’d want to do that at home? You can! Organize toys, food pantries, art supplies, and more. Buy inexpensive plastic bins, label them, and sort everything by category. This activity teaches your child how to be organized and tidy around the house!

Garage Cleanup
The garage can be the most difficult place to keep clean. If you are storing your belongings in there, have your child help you neatly organize them. Store seasonal decorations in bins and stack them out of sight. Gather items you don’t need any more and take them to a donation center. Your child will not only practice organizational skills but will fulfill a good deed as well!
