Memorial Day is almost here, and there are plenty of things you and your child can do, even while social distancing. Take the time to teach your child to celebrate our servicemen and women! This list includes recipes, crafts, and other activities that will get your child into the patriotic spirit.

Patriotic Pastries
Create foods with the colors of the flag! The American Flag Pop-Tart recipe only requires a few ingredients: pop-tarts, vanilla icing, fruit leather, and star-shaped fruit chews. You can bake a homemade pop-tart and skip the icing, or simply buy unfrosted ones from the store. The steps are simple for your child to do:

  1. Toast the pop-tarts.

  2. Slather a layer of icing on top of the pop-tart.

  3. Arrange the stars on the left side to resemble the flag.

  4. Slice the fruit leather into thin strips, then arrange them on the pop-tart as stripes on the flag.

Virtual Outings
Many museums, zoos, and aquariums are offering online activities and virtual tours. With the internet, your family can journey through the world to see art and animals right from your couch. Check out ancient mummies at the world’s oldest national public museum, The British Museum, or go under the sea to watch beluga whales, jellyfish, African penguins, and more at the Georgia Aquarium. Or fulfill the day’s purpose by taking a virtual tour of the Museum of Military History! Be sure to view our list of local activities to do as well.

Go Outside
You and your child may be getting some cabin fever, so here’s an opportunity to go outside safely. Camping in a remote area or going fruit picking at the local farm are great ways to get a little fresh air without getting too close to others. You can pick up some fresh blueberries and strawberries for whatever patriotic foods you’re cooking up!

Honor Veterans
This day is a perfect time to teach your child service and stewardship by memorializing fallen soldiers online. Your contribution is greatly appreciated and will show your child how to give back. Visit the VA’s website to find opportunities. You can send a care package or letter, sew masks for veterans and their families, or plant a tree through a planting program like American Forest. With this organization, your family can honor a veteran with a living tribute, all while helping the environment. Don’t forget to pause and remember what this day is all about. Take a moment of silence with your child to honor those who have served.
