NOVEMBER 8TH IS NATIONAL S.T.E.M.-S.T.E.A.M. DAY!

Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics are all critical fields that help make a difference in our lives every day. That’s why on November 8 we celebrate National S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. Day to honor the importance of these subjects in our schools. The best schools in Orlando have some ways you can celebrate this special day with your child.

Go Exploring
S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M. activities don’t have to be indoor experiments and lessons! If your child is interested in nature, let her be a wildlife biologist for a day by taking her outside for a “neighborhood safari.” As you explore your local area, let your child write down characteristics or make drawings of the different plants and animals you spot together. When you get home, you can look up the descriptions together and find out more about the different fauna and flora of your hometown. You can even check the weather before you go out for your safari and talk about what causes rain, the water cycle, or where rainbows come from. By incorporating mini S.T.E.M. lessons into daily life, you’re showing your child the value of these important skills.

Get Curious
Children are naturally curious — their young minds are just beginning to explore everything the world has to offer! Because of this, you can engage your child in S.T.E.A.M. learning by connecting it to something she already wants to know more about. Whether it’s learning how to solve engineering problems with LEGOs, finding out how video games are made with interactive coding lessons, or researching food science to make some yummy recipes, your child will be more connected to what’s she’s learning if she’s investigating her own interests. She’ll be having so much fun, she may not even realize that she’s learning!

Don’t Forget the “A”!
The “A” in S.T.E.A.M. stands for “Art,” and this subject is just as critical to your child’s education as science and math. Creativity, after all, will be an essential skill no matter what field she chooses to pursue! Encourage your child’s artistic interests with simple arts and crafts projects. You can even theme the art projects to celebrate another upcoming holiday, like these Thanksgiving crafts for Turkey Day. No matter how your child expresses her artistic voice, don’t forget to display her work proudly on the fridge!
