Teaching Your Child About Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day just passed and your child may be feeling confused about what it was all about. Does your child have questions about this day? The private schools in Orlando, FL have the answers. Here are Groundhog Day activities to help you teach your child about the holiday!

Sing a Song
Every holiday has songs that help kids understand and celebrate the holiday. Groundhog’s Day is no different. For example, the song “I’m a Little Groundhog'' is sung to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot.” The lyrics will help your child understand why all the adults are waiting for a groundhog to see its shadow. Plus, it’s a fun song to teach your child to sing along to.

I’m a Little Groundhog

I’m a little groundhog

In my hole.

On February 2nd, you will know.

If I see my shadow,

It will be

Six more weeks of winter

For you and me!

Make Your Own Shadows
Explaining Groundhog Day to your child is great, but showing them what happens on Groundhog Day is even better. Create a pop-up groundhog craft using simple materials, including a toilet paper roll, a popsicle stick, a printer, glue, scissors, crayons or colored pencils, and paper. Your child will start by gluing a piece of paper around the toilet paper roll. Then, she will draw and color a groundhog’s head that will be glued on the popsicle stick. Once the craft is complete, use a flashlight and have your child make the groundhog pop out of its hole. Shine the flashlight to cast the groundhog’s shadow for six more weeks of winter. Explain that if the groundhog doesn’t see a shadow, spring will come early!

Read a Groundhog-Themed Book
For children who are avid readers or who love a good story, there are plenty of books themed about groundhogs and Groundhog’s Day. Gail Ribbons book, “Groundhog Day!” is a perfect example and can be found on YouTube, too! This is a great way to spend some quiet time together, while helping your child understand why Groundhog Day is such a fun tradition.
